AIIS Language programs are conducted in environments where the languages are commonly spoken, so that formal instruction is supplemented by the experience of using the language in daily life. The students normally stay with host families arranged by the AIIS to enrich their knowledge of the target language and experience the local culture. The Institute maintains well-equipped language-training centers and has been offering the following Language Programs regularly :
- Bangla at Kolkata
- Hindi at Jaipur
- Urdu and Persian at Lucknow
- Punjabi at Chandigarh
- Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit and Marathi at Pune
- Gujarati at Ahmedabad
- Malayalam at Thiruvanathapuram
- Tamil at Madurai
- Telugu at Visakhapatnam
Apart from these regular Language Programs the following Programs are also offered whenever there has been a demand.
- Kannada at Mysore
- Oriya at Bhubaneswar
- Tibetan at Dharmasala
- Kashmiri at Delhi
AIIS is also offering Hindi to Undergraduate Students since Summer 2005.
There are 2 kinds of Language Programs offered: one is a 10 week Summer Program offered between June - August. The other is an Academic Year Program of 8 months offered between September-April. In the last 8 years there has been an enormous increase in the number of students for both these programs as shown in the graphs below.
HOUSING INFORMATION
AIIS assists students in finding local accommodation within a reasonable commuting distance of the Language Program center. Depending on the size of the Program and the availability of suitable accommodations, students are sometimes housed in furnished apartments, but more commonly live in "paying guest" or "home-stay" arrangements in private homes, preferably with families who speak the target language. Detailed guidelines will also be sent to students once they are accepted into an AIIS Program.
